TEN TO FOLLOW UPDATE - 2016/17 Chris Day

Ten to Follow update

We’re into December now after a superb month of racing in November.

The season is really shaping up and the big Christmas meetings at Kempton and Leopardstown should shed some light on what may happen in the spring.

The Ten To Follow has had a few winners since the last update and, alphabetically, Aux Ptits Soins, travelled up to Kelso on Sunday for a well contested 3 mile novice chase. His jumping was good apart from a mistake late on and the form will need improving on as those who followed him home were rated 135 and 137 but we know he can run fast from his hurdling days and his next appearance in either the Feltham or Dipper is eagerly anticipated.

Ball D’Arc ran fourth of five in a Punchestown Graded chase behind Identity Thief and may now be considered ready to be given his head in handicap company from a mark of 130. If so, I expect him to be able to win more than once from his current perch.

On Saturday, in the King Henry V111 Novice Chase, Charbel ran an excellent second to Altior, probably the most exciting novice seen all year. His jumping was excellent and he was only picked up late on albeit on the bridle and the form is top drawer. It’s hard to see him beating the winner but he ought to win lots of chases over the next couple of years.

Different Gravey won a 2 ½ mile novice chase at the Ascot November meeting, beating 150 rated hurdler, Brother Tedd in impressive fashion. His jumping improved as he warmed to the task and he was strong at the line suggesting that he won’t struggle if asked to go 3 miles in time. He’s entered at Cheltenham over the weekend and will be worth watching to see where he heads in the spring.

West Approach has been frustrating this season and once again lost out in third in a 3 mile novice hurdle at the BetVictor meeting. I still feel he has a big performance in him and hope it comes this weekend at Cheltenham. If so don’t even be surprised to see him be elevated into the betting for the World Hurdle.

In other news, Minella Present is apparently being saved for the spring festivals according to Neil Mulholland in his stable tour in today’s Weekender and it’s hard to think of better handicapped horses for that time of year.

All the Best
