Here’s my final review by Chrisday100 Twitter
Hollies Pearl won a decent National Hunt Novices’ Hurdle over 2 miles 3 furlongs at Haydock on 23rd March running just about to her mark in defeating a useful Nicky Richards trained mare but the feeling remains that this has been a season of missed opportunities and her potential has not been reached. She wasn’t really a betting proposition at 8-15 and she really ought to be able to use her mark of 128 somewhere soon in a bigger field possibly over the minimum trip.
Anibale Fly has undoubtedly proved a disappointment so far, sent off 9-4 favourite at Fairyhouse’s Easter meeting where he had been so impressive in a bumper last year. He finished a one paced 6th of the 15 runners from a mark of 136 and appeared to lack pace for the minimum trip as previously predicted. If he turns up at Punchestown/galway over further he could go well but is likely to be well found in the market and hasn’t really impressed as a fluent jumper of hurdles so far.
On to Aintree and Saphir Du Rheu reverted to fences in the Grade 1 Martell Cup but could not keep tabs on the leaders and faded out of contention on the second circuit. Whilst I’d agree his season has been disappointing compared to the expectations held for him I think a lot of the stable’s horses have not been right and he appears to have really suffered for having a hard enough race in the Hennessy before trying to keep tabs on the brilliant Thistlecrack at Ascot soon after. He’s unlikely to appear on my future lists of horses to follow but there’s no doubt there’s an engine in there if he can be coaxed back and wouldn’t surprise me if he were to return to winning ways in time.
As De Mee ran in Friday’s Topham Handicap Chase over the National fences and appeared to be going best of all entering the straight having loved the challenge and traveled like a serious horse. However, once under pressure he appeared to put his head in the air and not run on before fading on the run in. TV pundits seemed to think he didn’t stay but I can’t have that as he’s an EBF Final winner and my opinion was that his wind was bothering him. Hopefully we’ll get the nod that he’s had a suitable operation shortly and he remains a bright prospect possibly a future National horse given the way he took to the big fences.
The other Nicholls trained runner in the race was Ruben Cotter who got round in his own time without ever threatening to get into the places and appears to be out of form. Always highly thought of he’s been an under achiever overall but could be the type to win a decent summer chase if kept on the go, possibly round Market Rasen as he’s shown his best form at right handed tracks.
A big thanks goes to Chris and all the hard work he put into Ten to follow this NH season 2015/16 reviewing/updating his selections and putting up his anti post suggestive bets.
