Since our last update, 3 selections have run, all with festival aspirations going into their respective races and arguably none of them having enhanced their chances for March.

Champagne West ran in The Scilly Isles Novices Chase and appeared to have everything in his favour in terms of ground and trip but fell when two lengths off the leader and travelling well at the second of the Railway Fences. As per usual, he pulled very hard yet nothing was travelling better than him although news came that he’d injured himself and is now out for the season. Apparently the aim is The Paddy Power Gold Cup in November and it will be interesting to see what rating he gets next season. Everything he’s done this season suggests he’s better than a handicapper.

On Saturday, Taquin Du Seuil reappeared after an enforced absence since Haydock in November in The Denman Chase and stepped up on previous efforts this season in finishing fourth to impressive winner, Coneygree. My best guess is that he won't even run in The Gold Cup after this effort as he appeared to fail to stay but I believe he’s just had a problem this season and could well be best given time and coming back in the Autumn. If he does go to Cheltenham, The Ryanair would now seem the likeliest target and his trainer can certainly prime them for the big days.

Finally, Calipto, an ante post gamble in the season’s richest handicap hurdle, The Betfair Hurdle, also ran a slightly disappointing fourth but raced held up in a slowly run affair where it paid to be up with the pace before staying on through beaten horses. He made a mistake early on and seemed to get in behind but I don't believe he got a particularly good ride and feel there may be better to come in The County Hurdle or Coral Cup in four weeks’ time. Either way, it’s fair to say he now has it all to prove if he’s to confirm the stable’s belief that he’s their Arkle horse for 2016.
