In truth it could be any number things – from dabbling with stocks and shares to betting there is life on Mars. There is no right or wrong when it comes to your favourite betting medium. What is important - you find a niche. Don't follow the crowd beyond a basic sport. Love football? Well find an angle which most people have never considered or data that gives you insight beyond what is freely available. Use everyday data in a novel way. Think outside the box!
From my experience, it pays to specialise. Why? No one can possibly know it all. There simply isn't enough time in the day to cover unending sport. Instead of watching every football league – know the third division as if you were sitting in the black chair on Mastermind!
I knew this old bloke who was a very successful antiques dealer. All he ever bought and sold was art deco. He knew his subject well. I asked him why art deco? He said: ''To make a profit it isn't about being the best in the business – it is simply about knowing that little bit more than most.''
He is right.
I have spend years honing my skills within two-year-old horse racing. The greatest form of learning comes from making mistakes. Don't let these mistakes dip into your pocket. Better still, learn from someone else's mistakes. No cost. You can see the pain etched on the faces of people when they lose big. That knowing look of punters chasing their losses. As long as you learn from your experiences you are moving in the right direction. Each and every winning results is telling you the right path to take. Follow that winning path. What makes a winning bet?
Know your subject matter.
Aim to know your subject better than most. Enjoy what you are doing and always keep at the front of your mind what makes you money. Stick with proven results - the key to success. When you understand what makes a winning bet stay disciplined and don't push too hard searching for the impossible. It is too easy to destroy what has taken years to understand.
Every gambler – like an author – must find their own voice. What feels right to you, sits happy in your comfort zone and helps you progress through those endless trials and tribulations. Some people bet huge sums of money and it simply doesn't concern them win or lose. Others, however successful, will never feel comfortable betting several hundred pounds let alone more. You have to listen to yourself and be confident and comfortable with your lot.
You are probably thinking this is an open-ended article.
I'm looking for answers to questions!
Don't look for a quick answer. If it was so simply everyone would be gambling and winning. You don't need me to tell you they are not! However, a number of people do win. Don't be fooled into thinking that the bookmakers always hold the aces. There are some exceptionally clever gamblers – the kind of people you don't see – who make their gambling pay. As my friend said: '' They know a little bit more than most.'' Trust me, they didn't wake up one morning to find they're a professional gambler. It took years of work. Disciplined. The day arrived when they had become a professional gambler.
My approach to gambling on horses has taken years to understand. It is a time consuming, hard, slog and there is no easy money. But I have made my betting pay. I bet level stake simply because when I make good money it often comes from big priced winners. You can guarantee if you don't do this you will bet big on short priced odds and cut your stake on that 33/1 ''chance''.
Start by betting small and build your bank. If you can't make money betting small then you will lose big money betting big. Live and learn. Find ways to improve your success. Enjoy what you are doing in a relaxed manner. People often say that a good gambler shows little emotion – win or lose. I'm not so sure that is really true or a productive approach. You need to be disciplined in your approach but I hate losing money and if it happens through making a mistake, complacency or chancing my arm then you need to feel that loss and remember it. There will always be times when you fall short of your best but try to follow a disciplined approach (write down guidelines if you wish) to make sure when you bet it is for all the right reasons. Bet to win. Let others bet for fun.
Top ten pointers:
- Find your niche
- Work hard – be better than most
- Let the win results guide your progress
- Be disciplined – it will make you money
- Bet small – build your bank
- Bet level stake unless you have strong data to pick between your bets
- Enjoy what you are doing – be confident in your ambitions
- Bet within your comfort zone
- Learn from mistakes and keep to guidelines – don't do things on the spur of the moment
- Never chase losses
- Bet what you can afford to lose – if you lose regularly (STOP GAMBLING)
